Genesis 16:7 The angel of the Lord found Hagar near a spring in the desert. There are over 100 verses concerning angels in the Bible, maybe we should take more notice of them. The first mention is this one quoted above and is also concerning a pregnancy! I find that interesting!
Matthew 1:20 An angel of the Lord appeared to him. The angel said to him, "Joseph, don’t be afraid to take Mary as your wife. She is pregnant by the Holy Spirit." There are several angels in this nativity story. Do you think people still see angels today?
Matthew 1:19 Her husband Joseph was an honorable man and did not want to disgrace her publicly. So he decided to break the marriage agreement with her secretly. Maybe you know someone who has been pregnant outside marriage...
Matthew 1:18 The birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. His mother Mary had been promised to Joseph in marriage. But before they were married, Mary realized that she was pregnant by the Holy Spirit. Immediately after the genealogy, Matthew explains Jesus' birth. There is no record of the angel...
Luke 1:26-28 Six months after Elizabeth had become pregnant, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a city in Galilee. The angel went to a virgin promised in marriage to a descendant of David named Joseph. The forerunner to the Christmas story is here at the beginning of Luke's gospel.
Matthew 1:17 So there were 14 generations from Abraham to David, 14 generations from David until the exile to Babylon, 14 generations from the exile until the Messiah. As one who likes numbers I find this fascinating. Why fourteen generations?
Luke 2:3 All the people went to register in the cities where their ancestors had lived. If we should have a national census in the 21st century, I am supposing that the whole thing would be done by internet. But can you imagine if we didn't have modern international communications?
His government and peace will have unlimited growth. In part of Jesus' long farewell talk to His disciples He talked about His peace being different to that of the world. Peace I leave with you; My peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives.
Isaiah 9:6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Hundreds of years before the birth of Jesus, the prophet Isaiah promised a Saviour.
Proverbs 8:27-30 I was there when He set the heavens in place. Continuing from yesterday's study about Jesus being alive from the beginning of time, we read just a few verses from Proverbs chapter 8. I think it is one of the happiest chapters in the entire Bible.
