Habakkuk – Day 1

Habakkuk 1:2-3

How long, Lord, must I call for help, but you do not listen? Or cry out to you, “Violence!” but you do not save? Why do you make me look at injustice? Why do you tolerate wrong doing? Destruction and violence are before me; there is strife, and conflict abounds.

The Thought

Habakkuk sounds as though he has been listening to our modern day news programmes! He was fed up with the world situation as he saw it, and as he heard about what was happening all around him, so finally he went before The Lord and asked for an explanation. He also couldn’t understand why God wasn’t doing something about the problems. Something many of us have been doing for several months now. “How long Lord?” has been our cry.

The three short chapters of Habakkuk could well have been written by a modern day prophet, although Habakkuk is not a “normal” prophet, he just has a conversation with God which has been kept for us to learn from.

Many of us are crying out right now to God to bring change in the world’s circumstances, and we tell Him what is happening as if He doesn’t know, and can’t see it. How often do we forget that our Heavenly Father does see EVERYTHING that happens on the earth and beyond? We also forget that His plans for mankind will succeed, and will not be thwarted in any way.

We also tend to forget that God has an enemy! The devil was beaten at the cross, but somehow satan keeps forgetting that he was beaten and is still determined to fight back.

Action

Read the first chapter of Habakkuk today and feel the prophet’s frustration.

Note that the Lord quickly responds hinting to Habakkuk that he can’t imagine what is on the horizon.

Pray with confidence for the evil in our world right now to be brought into the open. Ask God to show you what is truth and what is not.
