Remembering – Day 21
The disciples were discussing why Jesus had told them to beware the yeast of the Pharisees, they wrongly supposed that He said what He said because they had forgotten to bring bread! Nothing was further from the truth! Jesus was capable of producing bread from stones if He needed it.
Mark 8:17-19
Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked them: “Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Are your hearts hardened? Do you have eyes but fail to see, and ears but fail to hear? And don’t you remember? When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?” “Twelve,” they replied.
The Thought
The disciples were discussing why Jesus had told them to beware the yeast of the Pharisees, they wrongly supposed that He said what He said because they had forgotten to bring bread! Nothing was further from the truth! Jesus was capable of producing bread from stones if He needed it. Even satan knew that (Matthew 4:3)!
What went wrong here was that the disciples really had forgotten to bring bread, consequently, their minds were occupied with their physical needs, and they were not thinking of miracles, even though they had witnessed many! Jesus’ thoughts were on a different level. He was still thinking about the questions the Pharisees had been asking Him, wanting to see miracles and trying to test Him.
How easy it is for all of us to forget what Jesus did in Biblical times, and even what He has done for us in our own lives.
Action
Think today of things Jesus has done for you in the past and ask Him to remind you often of those things, not as an epitaph to the past, but as a reminder for today, to help you live in a place of expectation of divine intervention, not just when you need bread, but anytime, anywhere for anything.
Bread is a basic necessity of life, and it is used as such in several Biblical images. Jesus Himself said I am the bread of life (John 6:35). Read that chapter, and think about what that means for you today.
