Remembering – Day 22

Jeremiah 2:32

Does a young woman forget her jewellery, a bride her wedding ornaments? Yet my people have forgotten me, days without number.

The Thought

What a sad statement this is from the Lord through this young prophet Jeremiah (Jeremiah 1:7). This second chapter with the message given direct from The Lord to Jeremiah contains a heartfelt summary of Israel’s history, letting Jeremiah know that God is not happy with His people who have forgotten Him and all He did for their ancestors.

God was always looking for a righteous family, who would follow Him and love and honour Him, but all through history His people have let Him down by forgetting him, or ignoring Him, or being blatantly disobedient to Him! How sad!

The suggestion in today’s verse is that none of us would forget things that we consider essential, and for a young woman in those days, her jewellery was among some of her most treasured possessions, especially that which she would wear for her marriage! For many in our day it is too! Even more important, especially in a traditional style marriage, are the extras worn by the bride, and the rings that the couple will exchange! It would be unheard of to forget those important things.

We all need to recognise afresh how important God is in our lives. Without Him we would not be on the earth, doing what we are doing.

Action

Thank God today for the mission He has given you, to tell others who He is, to live in a way that will draw them to Him (Mark 16:15).

Read the first few chapters of Jeremiah and be challenged by the major task God gave this young prophet.

Pray for young, and not so young, people today to hear God’s call and be obedient as Jeremiah was. Challenge yourself to share your faith with someone today.
