The Weather – Day 12
The prophet did not answer the question, but explained to God why he fled as though God knew nothing about it. We all do that sometimes; explain situations to God, as though He sees nothing of what is happening on the earth! Interestingly God just gave Elijah his next assignment!
1 Kings 19:11
The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.” Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake.
The Thought
God was speaking to Elijah after his great victory against Jezebel when God answered his prayers and sent rain. (See day 9 of this study). After that huge success, and very tiring day when Elijah had prepared sacrifices, prayed his heart out, mocked the enemy forces and then run for his life (1 Kings 19:3) he fell asleep from exhaustion. He was wakened by an angel (v5) who provided angelic food which gave him strength to continue his journey for a further forty days and nights (v7-8)!
What happened to the prophet on that mountain is one of the better known Biblical stories. After the earthquake, wind and fire, came the Lord’s whisper with a question. Elijah’s response to the Lord’s question “What are you doing here Elijah?” always makes me smile. The prophet did not answer the question, but explained to the Lord why he had fled as though God knew nothing about it.
We all do that sometimes; explain our situations to the Lord, as though He sees nothing of what is happening on the earth! Interestingly God did not sympathise with Elijah. He just gave him his next assignment!
Action
Read 1 Kings 19 and take note of the conversations with the angel and the Lord. Note that every time, Elijah was obedient even if he didn’t always know what the Lord’s purpose was.
Note too that God makes it clear that He knows everything that happens on the earth. Pray today about your personal situation and praise God that nothing is hidden from Him.
