The Weather – Day 9

If ever there was a verse about confidence and faith in our wonderful God, this is that verse. There had been no rain for three years. But in the first verse of this chapter God told Elijah that He was about to break that curse, and provide rain once more.

1 Kings 18:41

And Elijah said to Ahab, “Go, eat and drink, for there is the sound of heavy rain.”

The Thought

If ever there was a verse about confidence and faith in our wonderful God, this is it. There had been no rain for three years. But in the first verse of this chapter God told Elijah that He was about to break that curse, and provide rain once more. And He did, but not immediately! It was as though God was playing games with the idol worshippers in Ahab’s kingdom, especially with his evil wife Jezebel!

The account earlier in this chapter of the sacrifices made on the altar makes interesting reading and is worth an epic film. (Maybe it is already an epic film!)

The Lord had held back rain over rebellious Israel for about 3 years (1 Kings 18:1) and He told Elijah that this drought was almost over. But He wasn’t quite finished with proving to everyone that He was The Lord of lords and King of creation.

Action

Read 1 Kings 18 taking time to appreciate the different attitudes there:-

• The confidence of Obadiah who had hidden the prophets of The Lord (1 Kings 18:4).
• Obadiah’s nerves when he met Elijah who wanted him to go and tell the king that the prophet was in the area (1 Kings 18:7-14).
• The determination mixed with fear as Ahab went to find Elijah (1 Kings 18:17).
• Anticipation of the people as they gathered having heard that Elijah was there. And their nerves and excitement as they listened to what Elijah was proposing (1 Kings 18:21-24).
• The anxiety of the prophets and the frustration of the idol worshippers as they got no response from their god (1 Kings 18:26-29).
• The anticipation once more of the crowd as Elijah took time to repair The Lord’s altar (1 Kings 18:30-33) then he soaked it in water (v33-35)!! Where did that water come from if there was such a drought???
