Truth – Day 10

Ephesians 4:15

Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of Him who is the head, that is, Christ.

The Thought

This is one of those verses that has been taken out of context and abused by many well meaning christians through the years. Too many of us have suffered because of other well meaning believers speaking the truth in love. They thought it gave them freedom to criticise.

A reading of the preceding verses tells us that the verse is speaking to those who have reached unity in the faith and the knowledge of the Son of God, and become mature attaining to the fullness of Christ (Ephesians 4:13). There are very few of us, if any, who have reached that level! Then Paul goes on to encourage us to grow up in our thinking, and not be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching… (v 14)!

These verses are talking to the “church hoppers” who don’t stay in one place to learn patience, and deepen their faith. They move around listening to different pastors, priests and prophets, but never becoming part of a church family. The consequence of that is a lack of spiritual growth.

Being part of a family means contributing to family life, and maturing as we practice patience, and learn how to encourage and how to forgive. Jesus’ disciples did not go from temple to temple listening to other teachers. They had found The One who taught the TRUTH and they followed Him. Even when it was hard.

Action

Read Ephesians 4 prayerfully today and meditate on some of the verses that leap off the page for you.

Pray for the Christian group that you are a part of, that each part does its work (v16).
