Idols – Day 25

Colossians 3:5

Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.

The Thought

This verse confirms much of what we have been thinking all the way through this study! The most common form of idolatry is giving in to our own desires! Here Paul calls that our earthly nature.

Maybe that is the worst form of idolatry too, because it can affect all the decisions we make each day, what we eat, what we look at on our phones, our conversations with people we work with, or meet outside the home, and even those we live with, in fact it can affect every minute of our day!

The beginning of this chapter begins with Paul urging us to set our minds on things above, because we have been raised or born again into a new life and close relationship with Him. The promise in verse 4 is that when Jesus returns, we who are in Heaven will accompany Him and appear with Him in glory!

What a thing that is to think about and look forward to. Exciting times are ahead for all of us who believe and follow Jesus. This whole chapter is an encouragement to live holy lives, to be rid of the old habits and attitudes and follow the example of Jesus.

Later in the chapter Paul encourages his readers to be forgiving and compassionate, demonstrating love and peace with thankfulness in every situation.

Action

Read Colossians 3 today and allow the Lord to work on which ever characteristic He highlights for you.

Pray for help in the things you find most difficult.

As you go through your day, notice the things that irritate you about others, often we can find the same failings in ourselves and our own lives that need to be worked on too!
