Spiritual Warfare – Part 4

WHO IS OUR SPIRITUAL ENEMY?

The enemy of mankind since the beginning of time has been the devil or satan. Read Genesis 3 to find out how deception succeeded with Eve, but later in that chapter we have the promise that Jesus will win the fight. (Genesis 3:1-15)

The devil was once an angel in heaven, read Isaiah 14:11-27 which tells something of his history and is a prophetic word about Jesus winning the victory.

Since the cross the enemy has effectively been a vanquished foe, but the Bible is clear that he does not give up his fight until the end of time as we know it. (Revelation 20:10)

In the meantime the Bible gives us lots of advice about how the enemy works and how to win our daily battles against him.

  • 1 Peter 5:8

Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

  • 1 Thessalonians 2:18

For we wanted to come to you—certainly I, Paul, did, again and again—but Satan blocked our way.

Have you ever experienced satan trying to devour you or to block your way?

Jesus had a face to face battle with satan, when the Holy Spirit led him into the wilderness.

Read Matthew 4:1-11 to see how Jesus overcame him.

What can we learn from this?

Read Matthew 13:38-40 to discover some of what Jesus said about the enemy.

We are blessed to be living almost “at the end of the age” and can rejoice that satan’s days are numbered, in the meantime we need to know how to keep him out of our lives and to win the battles he draws us into.

To do that we’ll look first at some spiritual battles of the Old Testament and see what spiritual weapons were used then and are still available for us today.
