Children of God – Day 5

John 1:13

…children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

The Thought

Just in case we didn’t understand yesterday’s verse, John qualifies it later in the same sentence. Once any single person becomes a believer in Jesus, it is as though that person steps out of his or her personal family tree and into God’s family tree.

This is not to say that we disown our birth family whoever they may be, believers or not. It is about the children of the inheritance referred to in the commandments, where we read:-

I The Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing the sins of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate Me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love Me and keep My commandments. Exodus 20:5-6, Deuteronomy 5:9-10

We hear a lot today in some parts of the Christian world about inherited sin, and the need to be cut off from, or delivered from, the sins of previous generations.

In this verse the Lord is telling us that we can move out of our physical family tree and into His. Think of what that means. No more inherited diseases! Because your earthly parent had a particular character trait doesn’t mean you have to. You can inherit the character of God. How it would change the world if all Christians had the character of Jesus and lived as He did! That’s what being a child of God really means.

Action

Pray for the reality of being a child of God to become more evident in your life today. Pray for the members of your christian group to live as God’s family, to love each other as He loves each one.

Praise God today that He is working in His church and in the lives of each of His children.
