Work/Works – Day 18

Acts 1:7-8

Jesus said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by His own authority, but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

The Thought

There is no mention of work in these verses. But as today is remembered as “Ascension Day” in many parts of the world, it is a good opportunity to think about the “work” that Jesus told His followers they would be doing after He had left them. One of the things that seems to be most important is that they were to do nothing until they received power from Holy Spirit! Many missionaries have gone out since those days without waiting for that power, and many have suffered much. How tragic!

The disciples went to the “upper room” and waited! And they waited! And they waited! They had no idea how long they were to wait, and no idea what they were actually waiting for. But Jesus had said to go to the upper room, and they were waiting for His next instruction! When “the promise” suddenly arrived, they were all “set on fire” by the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:3)!

In the meantime these faithful ones created their own little jobs! They nominated someone to replace Judas, and they prayed and they talked, and they waited. Once Holy Spirit came with His unique power, they were all equipped for the work they were called to do.

Action

Pray today that you will be equipped for whatever work God has for you in the future.

Read Acts 1&2 and be amazed once again at the way The Lord orchestrates everything, right to the last minute.
