Work/Works – Day 1

Psalms 77:12

I will consider all Your works and meditate on all Your mighty deeds.

The Thought

This month we will think about what God says concerning work, His work and ours! We will start with this encouraging, (and challenging) psalm written by Asaph, who was a musician in the priestly tribe of the Levites (1 Chronicles 6:39). Today we would say he was a worship leader and song writer.

Asaph, in this psalm, tells us that he was having a bad day, maybe not just a bad day, but several days (Psalms 77:1-2)! He was remembering better times (Psalms 77:5).

He got through the difficulties of those moments, by encouraging himself to think regularly about God’s nature, and deciding that God hadn’t changed (Psalms 77:8-9). God really was the same as He had always been, with good plans for His people who serve Him.

This song writer went on to make a choice to think about the good things that God had done, not just in his own life, but in the life of His people, the Israelites who were wandering in the wilderness, looking for the land He had promised them.

Those thoughts encouraged Asaph to be positive (Psalms 77:10-12) and instead of feeling sorry for himself the song-writer began to sing praises and declare the character of His Lord.

There is a good lesson there for all of us!

Action

What does the word “work” make you think about? How do you react to “work”?

Think about the times you get down-hearted and consider what that leads to. Irritation with others? With yourself? Overeating? Binge drinking?

Ask yourself if you are ever successful in lifting your own spirit.

Read Psalm 77 and be encouraged, as was Asaph.

Choose today to “consider the works of The Lord” whenever you are in need of encouragement.
