Truth – Day 7
Once converted, these people were expecting Jesus to come back very soon, and basically got tired of waiting and were wondering about going back to Judaism. The writer of the letter is suggesting they go back, not to Judaism, but to learn the basic truths of Christianity all over again.
Hebrews 5:12
Though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again.
The Thought
This is a serious reprimand by the writer of Hebrews, who many think is St. Paul, but others say may have been one of Paul’s companions, such as Barnabus. The message, written to the early believers who were mainly Jewish, is more important than the name of the author. Once converted, these people were expecting Jesus to come back very soon, and basically got tired of waiting and were wondering about going back to Judaism. The writer of the letter is suggesting they go back, not to Judaism, but to learn the basic truths of Christianity all over again.
It is good for all of us to do that sometimes. Verses 7-10 sum up the truth of who Jesus can be for a Jewish convert, but for those who don’t have that background, we need a different description, maybe describing the elementary truths of God’s word in a different way.
Action
Challenge yourself today about what you consider to be the basic truths of Christianity. Try preparing a 1minute description of why you believe and put your faith in Jesus. Dare to share it with someone you see and may never see again, at the supermarket cash desk, or on a bus or train. Walking in the park. Anywhere.
Think today about elementary truths of God’s word talking about Jesus from Genesis onwards. He is first mentioned, but not named in Genesis 3:15.
Read some other passages that forecast the truth of Jesus in the Old Testament. For example:- Isaiah 7:14 & 9:6, Psalm 22, & Zechariah 11:12-13.
If someone asked you today “What are the basics of your faith?” could you answer that question in a way that would lead the listener towards Christ?
