This post is Day 30 in a series of studies about “Mary’s of the Bible”. I strongly suggest you begin with the introduction to this study. Please click here to read it.
Feel free to comment below with your own thoughts about each verse and how you will be acting on each thought. Also, if you haven’t yet signed up to receive the notifications of new studies, you can do that today. (The form is at the bottom of the page).
Mary’s of the Bible – Day 30
We can suppose there were many other people whose names we will never know, who were at the cross that day watching the death of the one they thought would be Saviour of the world. We will not get to know those people while we live this side of Heaven.
John 19:25
Near the cross of Jesus stood His mother, His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.
The Thought
As we approach the end of our study this month we return to the cross to look at a verse naming three Marys! One of whom we have heard nothing about until this verse. Mary the wife of Clopas is not mentioned anywhere else in the Bible. Neither is Clopas! Many theologians or historians suggest that this verse could be referring to Cleopas. He is mentioned in Luke 24:18 as one of the two men leaving Jerusalem, heading for Emmaus. We cannot be sure. But it does seem to be logical! Whoever she was, this Mary, wife of Clopas was faithful to the end, watching at the cross, and hoping for the miracle.
We can suppose that there were many other people whose names we will never know, who were at the cross that day watching the death of the one they thought would be Saviour of the world. We will not get to know those people while we live this side of Heaven. But they will be happy to meet us one day when we are all living in our Heavenly homes.
We also didn’t know until this point that Mary the Mother of Jesus had any sisters. Nothing is said about her extended family, or Joseph’s in any of the gospels. The gospel writers really focused on their principal character: Jesus.
Action
Read Luke 24 today. Feel the sadness of those two disciples walking towards Emmaus, followed by the excitement of the revelation that Jesus had overcome death and was alive.
Pray that you, like each of them, will be able to minister to the needs of Jesus as well as to His 21st century disciples today.
Thank God for all those committed ladies who serve the Lord, often under difficult circumstances with non-believing partners, or other family demands.
