Hope – Day 13

Hebrews 10:23

Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for He who promised is faithful.

The Thought

The book of Hebrews is full of good suggestions for the people who follow the Lord. The author is anonymous, but is obviously a logical thinker. He wants his readers to get it fixed in their minds that because Jesus succeeded in His earthly mission and is now seated in Heaven, having opened the way for us to follow, we are able to live holy lives totally committed to Him, while waiting in expectation of the fulfilment of all His promises.

The hope referred to in today’s verse is the fact that Jesus opened the way to Heaven. The curtain was torn at the moment of His death. We no longer have need of a high priest making animal sacrifices (Hebrews 10:19-22). Verse 4 of this same chapter says: It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. Those Old Testament rituals were an important sign of what God had planned in the future.

The writer of Hebrews is asking us to look back at the promises God gave, and how they were fulfilled in Jesus. And also to be reassured that He will fulfill the promises He has made to us. The following chapter is well known for listing the great heroes of faith.

Our verse today tells us to hold on to our hope. In order to do that we have to be sure of what it is we hope for.

Action

Think today about what you hope for, in your own life and for family and friends you care for.

Read Hebrews 10 and let it help you understand afresh why Jesus came into the world and did what He did. Praise Him for His stamina in going through with His mission.

Pray for yourself and your church group to accomplish what God hopes for you in this new year.
