Angels – Day 26
Yes, maybe a man could have moved the stone. We are told that Joseph of Arimathea had put the stone in place after wrapping the body. Only his name is mentioned, but we can suppose he had servants to help. He would not have carried and prepared the body himself.
Matthew 28:2
There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from Heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it.
The Thought
Can you imagine this angel sat in victory having done what only he could do? Yes, maybe a man could have moved the stone. We are told that Joseph of Arimathea had put the stone in place after wrapping Jesus’s body (Matthew 27:59). Only his name is mentioned, but we can suppose he had servants to help. He would not have carried and prepared the body himself. Would he? Could he?
Even if he could, we are told that the stone was sealed in place (Matthew 27:66).
This angel, who had so terrified the guards that they “shook and became like dead men”, then had a “normal” conversation with the women visiting the tomb (verses 5-7). The angel reassured the women that there was nothing to fear, and gave them instructions as to what to do next.
As if talking to an angel, experiencing another earthquake (there had been one at the moment of the crucifixion Matthew 27:51-54), and seeing the empty tomb (Matthew 28:6) was not enough, these obedient women were then blessed to be the first to see Jesus alive.
What a life changing day that must have been!
Action
Spend time today trying to imagine the events of the crucifixion and resurrection. Praise God for His long term plans for mankind. Thank Him that He has revealed Himself to you as Saviour and Risen Lord.
Pray for those around you who have heard of Him but do not yet know Him as you would like them to. Pray for divine revelation for them and for your witness to be effective today. Thank Him in advance for what He will do.
