Angels – Day 27

Job 1:6

One day the angels came to present themselves before the Lord, and satan came with them.

The Thought

This sounds like a ceremonial procession in Heaven. We have no idea why the angels all went to Heaven that day. But we are told that satan who had been cast out of Heaven and had fallen down to earth like lightning (Luke 10:18), was with them.

In the conversation between God and satan (his name means “adversary”) that follows the verse for today, we can feel how proud God was of Job who had resisted all satan’s attempts to get him to sin. At the end of their conversation this fallen angel received permission to hassle Job, but not to kill him.

Even among non-believers this story is well known, and the whole book makes a fascinating study, but for now we need to see and remember that this demonic power did not have free reign but was limited by our Almighty God.

Ezekiel 28:13-19 and Isaiah 14:12-20 tell us that satan was created as an angel in heaven but pride became his downfall. His intention was to rule the world. We can see his evil influence at work in several world leaders today. His plans have not changed, but we know they will not succeed. Our God is greater and has already prophesied satan’s doom when he will be cast into the lake of fire for eternity (Revelation 20:10).

Praise God today that He has limited satan’s access to your life. Praise Him that Jesus overcame our enemy, the devil, at the cross.

Pray for those you know who are struggling with some of the things Job suffered with. Death of family members, unhelpful friends, loss of property and livelihood.

Ask Jesus to show you what you can do to be of help to them.
