Angels – Day 18

Acts 5:19

During the night an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the jail and brought them out.

The Thought

The book of Acts is one exciting story after another, it encourages us to be and to do as the disciples did. Sometimes there were difficult experiences, but the Lord ALWAYS had the upper hand.

Jesus had warned them, as He warns us, that “in this world you will have trouble” (John 16:33) but He continues in the same verse to tell us that He has overcome the world, so in the end all will be well.

We have no idea how many of the disciples were involved in this miraculous escape, no-one is named. But imagine their conversations in the jail. They must have had mixed feelings; depressed and frustrated to be where they found themselves, but elated at all they had been experiencing. Earlier in this chapter we read of healings, deliverances, and conversions that would thrill any modern day evangelist.

I imagine that they discussed these things and were praising God for all He had done amongst them during their first few days on the streets. But maybe they were praying or just sleeping, we don’t know, but we do know that they had a messenger from Heaven who set them free. The angel opened the doors so they walked out, without the guards noticing, then the angel locked the doors again (v 23)!

Action

Take time to read this chapter slowly today. In your mind’s eye see the crowds coming to be healed, and rejoicing in amazement at all the disciples were doing. Feel the anger of the Sadducees as they heard about all that was happening.

Ask yourself where you would be in this picture.

Watching the crowds? Coming to be healed? Calling others you know to come and see? How would you feel if a miracle worker visiting your church was jailed for what he was doing? Pray for those today who carry the gospel into dangerous parts of the world.
