Revelation 6:3-4

When the lamb opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature say, “Go!” A second horse went out. It was fiery red. Its rider was given the power to take peace away from the earth and to make people slaughter one another.

The Thought

When the lamb opened the second seal, a second horse went out. It was fiery red. Its rider was given power to take peace away and make people slaughter one another. How do the media decide which stories to tell and which to ignore? Who tells them what to say?

After the first rider “rode off as a warrior to win battles” we hear that peace is taken from the earth. War is usually the result of attempted conquest. The fiery red colour of this horse suggests argument and disagreement.

Remember that one of Jesus’ names is the Prince of Peace, but here we see Him allowing peace to be taken from the earth. Does that thought fit with the Jesus you know?

There have been many times in history when “people have been made to kill each other”. Many soldiers in the armies of the world have not joined forces because they wanted to kill, but in order to help keep the peace, and to protect their own country from an approaching enemy.

Sometimes in the past it has seemed as though peace would never return to the earth. Even today in our world of modern technology and instant communication, there is little real peace.

The news media seems to delight in telling us about world crises. Good news is not their priority. Do you feel as though the media tells us what people think about things rather than giving us facts? How do you suppose they decide which stories to tell and which to ignore? Who is telling them what to say?

Action

Think about what the word “peace” means to you. Depending on your circumstances it might be something very personal, or you may be looking at the bigger picture of world peace. Or both!

Pray today for the media, for honest reporting and unbiased journalism. Pray for yourself and those around you to experience that peace “that the world cannot give” (John 14:27).
