Revelation 6:14

The Thought

The sky vanished like a scroll being rolled up. Every mountain and island was moved from its place. Malachi 3 asks “Who will be able to endure the day he comes?” The Lord has been warning us of these things for a long time. He wants us to be ready.

The 6th seal reveals the most dramatic of events so far.

This vision seems to be going from bad to worse. It is as though John is suspended in space having a view of the whole cosmos. It is more impressive (and more scary) than any firework display ever seen in our time, and it certainly doesn’t seem to follow a logical pattern. In the previous verse we read that the stars fell to earth, now we read that the sky itself is rolled away! We must note that the “stars” and the “sky” are not the same thing! In my mind the vision then turned to the earth, but as I thought about it, I asked myself “Were the mountains and islands here on the earth or in the heavens?” I don’t know.

But think for a moment what mountains and islands could represent.

They both can be places of retreat, areas where solitude can be found, places of pilgrimage. Is God telling us that we cannot hide from Him anywhere?

On the earth today there are also islands and mountains which man has dedicated to other gods, places where we find shrines and idols. These are places where horrific things have happened, child sacrifices, orgies etc. All those places will be completely destroyed by the Lord’s vengeance on that day when the 6th seal is opened. In Malachi 3 the prophet asks “Who will be able to endure the day he comes?”

Action

Pray today that you, and those you love will be ones who stand on the “day He comes”.

Thank The Lord that He has warned us of these things. Thank Him for His word which He has given for our instruction.
