Who is God – Day 7
The Lord appeared to Hagar as an angel and sent her back to Sarah, Abraham’s wife. It was at that point that Hagar referred to “the God who sees me.” What an encouragement it must have been for Hagar, but a challenge too, because she would not want to return.
Genesis 16:13-14
Hagar gave this name to The Lord who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “I have now seen the One who sees me.” That is why the well was called Beer Lahai Roi; it is still there, between Kadesh and Bered.
The Thought
Continuing the short story of Hagar which we began to look at yesterday. The Lord appeared to her as an angel and sent her back to Sarah, Abraham’s wife. It was at that point that Hagar referred to the God who sees me (Beer Lahai Roi). What an encouragement it must have been for Hagar, but a challenge too, because she would not want to go back to the difficult situation she was living through. But she returned to her place in Abraham’s family as a different person.
Abraham eventually had another son (Isaac) through Sarah his wife when both of them were very old (Genesis 21:2). Sadly the two brothers were not allowed to grow together, because Ishmael did not have the right attitude to his baby brother (Genesis 21:9). That caused Sarah to ask Abraham to send Hagar away once more. This time with her son.
The God who had seen and had heard had a plan for both boys although we don’t read too much about Ishmael, but we do know that these half brothers were together at the death of their father many years later (Genesis 25:9).
Action
Read Genesis 21 today and remember that nothing is impossible for God (Luke 18:27).
Think about this name of God (The God who sees) today and be encouraged that God’s eyesight has not changed. He still sees everything! Ask yourself if that scares you or encourages you?
Pray for any you know who cannot have children, asking The Lord to bless them and give them His peace, and show them His solution, or His reason for the barrenness.
