Who is God – Day 8

Ezekiel 34:11-12

This is what the Sovereign Lord says “I myself will search for my sheep and look after them. As a shepherd looks after his scattered sheep when he is with them, so I will look after my sheep. I will rescue them.”

The Thought

What a great promise this is from Yahweh-Rohi which means God the Shepherd. But it appears in a sad chapter when God seriously criticised the priests and synagogue leaders of that time saying that they didn’t care for their communities as they should.

In Psalm 23 and in other psalms, David used this name for God when he declared the Lord is My Shepherd, I shall lack nothing.

Jesus declared Himself to be the good shepherd who lays down His life for His sheep (John 10:11). And He literally did that, giving up His life for each one of us. And for all those who don’t yet believe in Him.

Sadly there are church leaders today who take advantage of their position as shepherds but don’t fulfill the requirements of the job. The opening of Ezekiel 34 are a tirade from the Lord against the shepherds of Israel. I wonder how many of them listened to what this prophet said!

Action

Read Ezekiel 34:1-14 today and ask yourself what God thinks about the pastors and priests that are shepherding flocks that you are familiar with. Don’t think about what others have said. What God says is more important than the opinions of other people.

Pray for the pastors and priests in your area to receive and understand more direction from The Lord.

Praise God that Jesus came and laid down His life for you.

Pray for yourself and your immediate family that each one of those you care for will know Yahweh-Rohi as their own personal shepherd.
