Suddenly – Day 10

Acts 22:6-7

About noon as I came near Damascus, suddenly a bright light from heaven flashed around me. I fell to the ground and heard a voice say to me, “Saul, Saul! Why do you persecute Me?”

The Thought

At the close of the previous chapter we can read that Paul had been arrested in Jerusalem, and a furious crowd was following him. He himself calmed the crowd and then gave them his testimony. This “suddenly” is one of the best known Biblical stories. It can be read about in Acts 9 where we read of Saul’s conversion. (In Acts 13:9 we read that he was sometimes called Paul, with no explanation of the name change.)

More important than the name change is the character change. Saul’s “suddenly” was a life changing experience that few of us have had, although many of us may know people who will say that they “suddenly saw the light”, a reference to Jesus being the light of the world, but also a reference to Saul’s conversion. Because that is literally what happened to him.

“Seeing the light” is what happens to many of us in much of our daily lives, as we seek for answers to our mundane questions. “What shall I say?” “Where shall I go?” “What shall I do?”

Holy Spirit is always there ready to answer these things, and be our daily companion as we do what He is calling us to do. Sometimes He can surprise us as He surprised Saul that day on the Damascus road.

Action

Pray today that you will hear God’s voice more clearly than you have in the past. Think about the way He has already spoken to you; via a Bible reading, or through a conversation. Maybe He has spoken to you via a dream or through seeing an image while praying.

Read Acts 22 today and imagine the crowd coming after you because of your faith. Could you explain clearly why you believe in Jesus, and live the way you do?
