Suddenly – Day 11

Proverbs 29:1

Whoever remains stiff-necked after many rebukes will suddenly be destroyed – without remedy.

The Thought

Many of us can think of an occasion when there has been “sudden destruction”. And none of us want to think that our end will come suddenly. Most of us suppose we will live for many more years, and don’t like to talk about “the end”! One of the questions evangelists like to ask non-believers is “If you died today, do you know where you would go? Heaven or Hell?”

As practicing Christians death is something that we should not fear. If we follow the example of Jesus staying in communication with Father God, then we have nothing to fear. Heaven will have a place for us. But if we are self-centred and unhelpful there are some lessons to learn, and maybe taking note of some of the Proverbs would be a good idea.

A more modern version of this verse gives us a better idea of what the writer is thinking.

For people who hate discipline and only get more stubborn, there will come a day when life tumbles in and they break, but by then it’ll be too late to help them (The Message Bible).

People who are stiff-necked and stubborn are missing out on so much that God has to offer us.

Action

Read Proverbs 29 today and take note of any verses that speak to you personally.

Pray for those you know who have close relatives who don’t know Jesus. Living in an un-even partnership can be very difficult.

Praise God that it is never too late to change and many of our prayers for those people will be answered just before their moment of death.

Think as you go through your day about those in war-torn areas of the world. As I prepare this study in early October 2023 the war in Ukraine is continuing, and a war in Israel began a few days ago. Pray for God’s invention and the peace that only He can bring.
