Habakkuk – Day 24

Habakkuk 3 is a song of acclaim for what God has done in the past. It ends with a plea for Him to repeat His exploits. There is also a proclamation where Habakkuk declares that no matter how bad things get, he will choose to praise the Lord.

Habakkuk 3:1-2

Lord, I have heard of your fame; I stand in awe of your deeds, Lord. Repeat them in our day, in our time make them known; in wrath remember mercy.

The Thought

The Hebrew word “shigionoth” is used only twice in the Bible, here and in psalm 7 where the plural form “shiggaion” is used. The meaning is not clear, but both Bible chapters are full of emotion and possibly set to music, so it could be a musical term.

What follows in Habakkuk 3 is a song of acclaim for what God has done in the past ending with a plea for Him to repeat His exploits in Habakkuk’s day, and with a proclamation of dedication where Habakkuk declares that no matter how bad things get, he will choose to praise the Lord.

Psalm 7 has a similar format. David had many troubles, but God delivered him from them all, and David never ceased to praise God for His love and faithfulness.

The verses following Habakkuk 3:2 remind us, as Habakkuk was reminding himself of many of the mighty deeds God had done in the past. It is good when things seem to be going bad to remember what God has done for us, and be confident that He will not let us go, and that He is more than capable of rescuing us over and over again. But that is not an excuse for us to keep on making mistakes and purposely going our own way!

Action

Read Psalm 7 today and think of some of the problems you have lived through, remind yourself that God was there, and brought you through. Praise Him for those you recognise as learning situations that brought you nearer to Him.

Pray for those parts of the world that are suffering right now from war, famine, or death. Ask The Lord to bring good out of the sufferings.
