Work/Works – Day 31

John 4:34

My food, is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to finish His work.

The Thought

A good verse to finish with at the end of a month thinking about work. And an encouragement to all of us that God’s work is the best thing to be doing.

A quick short look at the work of Jesus gives us an encouragement that we should all be doing what He did. I am not saying that we should be constantly fasting! This was not a moment when Jesus fasted. He just wasn’t hungry!

This situation follows the conversation with the Samaritan woman that Jesus had met at the well. He had been alone talking to her, and as the disciples returned from shopping, she went off to evangelise her village!

In verse 31 we read that the disciples were encouraging Jesus to eat. His response was I have food to eat that you know nothing about (v 32).

Jesus was saying that doing what He was meant to do in life was as satisfying as eating a good meal. Many of us have that same feeling when we are gripped with something we enjoy. And to enjoy the work we do is really a gift from The Lord.

God had given Jesus the job of revealing His Heavenly Father to the people of the world. He passed that on to those who listened to Him.

Are we listening today?

Action

Let us finish this month with the challenge about work that Jesus gave to His disciples. It is also given to those of us today who consider ourselves His followers.

Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptised will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.

And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well. Mark 16:15-18.
