Work/Works – Day 23

John 6:29

Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one He has sent.”

The Thought

We mentioned this verse yesterday, but it is worth looking at in more detail. Jesus was answering the question posed by some in the crowd that had been searching for Him since they had seen the multiplication of bread and fish.

What must we do to do the works God requires? (v28). That is a good question for each of us to ask, and many people after conversions, especially dramatic ones, have posed it. They are sure, all of a sudden, that now they believe they must do something! They must become missionaries, give up regular work and become a preacher or teacher, or a door to door evangelist!

But what a simple answer Jesus gives:- Just believe!

Most of us wouldn’t consider that work, but sometimes we have to work at believing in order to stay in faith. Sometimes world events could make us think that Jesus is no longer real. Maybe He never was? Maybe it is just a legend or a fairy tale?

In those moments going back to believing in Jesus can feel like hard work! We need to remember all we have seen Jesus do in our own lives and those around us. We must remember His death and be amazed that He would give Himself up for us personally. That it was the only answer in this sinful world.

Action

Challenge your own faith today by thinking about just how much you believe.

Are there any doubts in your mind as to what Jesus is capable of?

Do you believe He is coming back to walk on the earth, and to fight that final battle described in Revelation (Revelation 1:7 & Zechariah 12:10)?

Ask yourself how much of your life testifies to your faith.
