The Weather – Day 18

Matthew 8:27

The men were amazed and asked “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey Him!”

The Thought

This well known verse about the amazement of Jesus’ disciples after He calmed the storm is repeated in Mark 4:41 and also in Luke 8 25, which uses the word “water” instead of “waves”. It is one of those stories that hundreds of people who have never become christians know about from school religion classes, or church attendance as children.

The thing that often surprises me is that in none of the gospels does anyone answer that question! Nobody said “He must be God!” They were all still unsure. They knew He was different. And they knew that He spoke like nobody had ever spoken, at least in their lifetimes. They were only just beginning to think that He could be the long awaited Messiah, but were not yet sure. This had been a sign for them to draw each one a bit closer to the truth.

God is still the Lord. He still directs the weather patterns. But the devil who sent that storm and ended up being rebuked by Jesus is still alive and trying to bring storms into our lives too. Storms in relationships, storms in our health and that of those around us, and storms in our working environments.

Jesus is asking us today to still those storms around us. They are a learning process for our lives, just as they were for the disciples in the boat on the stormy sea.

Action

Read Matthew 8 and ask yourself today, who Jesus really is for you. Be honest with yourself. If He is the King of kings and Lord of Lords then we must praise, honour and obey Him as such.

If you are one of His modern day disciples, then you too have His authority to calm the storms around you.
