Suddenly – Day 5

Joshua 11:7-8

So Joshua and his whole army came against them suddenly at the Waters of Merom and attacked them, and The Lord gave them into the hand of Israel.

The Thought

This verse is in the middle of several chapters that tell us of much fighting and many deaths. Most of us prefer to read about healing miracles and “nice things”! But there is much we can learn from these chapters as Joshua carried on the work that Moses had begun in leading the people of Israel into their promised land.

Often God gives His people a promise. Sometimes to an individual, sometimes a nation. But often that promise requires a lot of work on our part. We have to cooperate with The Lord to accomplish what He is calling us to do. That is often a test of our obedience.

The book of Joshua tells us of the conquest of Israel. Moses had been forbidden by God to enter the new land. After his farewell speech to the people (Deuteronomy chapters 31-33) he climbed a mountain and was never seen again!

Joshua had learned much from Moses, and was ready to lead God’s chosen people to take possession of their promised land. There were many “suddenlies” in the battles that lay ahead as Israelites took possession of what God had promised them.

Action

Read some of the book of Joshua today and praise God for some of the things He did in order to give The Holy Land to His people. Pray for God’s will to be accomplished in that land today. As I prepare this in early October there is serious fighting going on once more for the possession of that part of the world. Pray for God’s protection of His people there, and for His inspiration of the leaders. They need a few “suddenlies”!
