Suddenly – Day 29
Much of the book of Jeremiah is a severe reprimand to the people of Israel for their behaviour in neglecting the God of their fathers, and being influenced far too much by the people around them; the nations that they were supposed to have chased out of the holy land!
Jeremiah 15:8
I will make their widows more numerous than the sand of the sea. At midday I will bring a destroyer against the mothers of their young men; suddenly I will bring down on them anguish and terror.
The Thought
Is this a drastic promise by God about what He would do to Israel’s enemy? That is what we think on reading this verse alone. But a reading of the whole chapter as well as the preceding ones tells us no! That is not true, God is not speaking about heathen nations. It is to Israel that the prophet speaks these words!
Much of the book of Jeremiah is a severe reprimand to the people of Israel for their behaviour in neglecting the God of their fathers, and being influenced far too much by the people around them; the nations they were supposed to have chased out of God’s holy land!
Reading through earlier chapters we find the sins these people had committed. They had made and prayed to many idols (Jeremiah 7:30). In one of my Bibles that chapter is headed False religion is worthless!
Nothing has changed today, false religion still gains us nothing.
True religion is following Jesus, and knowing we are loved by the God who gave His Son so that we might live! Paul asked the Corinthians Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? (1 Corinthians1:20).
Action
How would you feel today if God spoke these words from Jeremiah to you?
Ask yourself if there is anything in your home that God might not like, and that would give the enemy a hold over you.
Read 1 Corinthians 1 and ask The Lord to speak to you through those verses. Pray and be prepared to get rid of anything in your home that you feel does not glorify the Lord.
