Suddenly – Day 21

Luke 21:34-35

Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you suddenly like a trap. For it will come on all those who live on the face of the whole earth.

The Thought

Another reference (see yesterday’s post) to the “suddenly” of Jesus’s return to earth tells us to watch our behaviour. Most of this chapter is talking of the end of the world, and can be depressing to read, especially if we allow ourselves to become distracted by the worrying words: wars, earthquakes, famines, pestilence! Most of these things have already happened in our life time, and many times before we were born. They continue today in many parts of the world.

We must remember that the thing to do is not to look at the negative, but to keep our eyes on the good, and obey the commands of Jesus to go and tell what He has done for us. Today’s verse warns us that the last day will come suddenly like a thief in the night as did our reading yesterday (1 Thessalonians 5:2).

One of Jesus’ questions to His followers during His short life on earth was when the Son of man comes, will He find faith on earth? (Luke 18:8). It is a subject that has been discussed for over two thousand years!

Action

Answer that last question from Luke 18 in your own mind today.

Most of us would probably reply personally and think about our own circle of believers, but much of the world has still never heard the truth of who Jesus was and is. What can you and I do about that?

Read Luke 21 today and pray for Christians who have “gone off the rails” or forgotten their first love (Revelation 2:4).
