Suddenly – Day 13

Mark 13:35-36

Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back – whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping.

The Thought

These closing verses of this chapter of Mark’s gospel give us much to think about as we are looking at the world today and realising that the things mentioned in this chapter are happening now! Many parts of the world are suffering with war, poverty, or disease. Many people, believers included, are living in fear of their homes being broken into, or their family members disappearing.

We must remember that Jesus told His listeners to not be afraid. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid (John 14:27).

The word fear or afraid is mentioned over 330 times in most Bible translations. Throughout His word we read of God telling His people to not be afraid, simply because He is their God. He is their ever present protector. Another verse giving us encouragement that all will be well is given by the prophet Isaiah. So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand (Isaiah 41:10).

Action

Read Mark 13 today and remember that God is in charge of our world. He sees everything that the devil is doing. In fact he knows well in advance what the enemy of God’s people is planning. So as we listen to the news media today let us remember that at the end of today’s chapter Jesus said What I say to you, I say to everyone: ‘Watch!’ (Mark 13:37).
