Samson – Day 2

Judges 13:2-3

A certain man of Zorah, named Manoah, from the clan of the Danites, had a wife who was childless, unable to give birth. The angel of the Lord appeared to her and said, “You are barren and childless, but you are going to become pregnant and give birth to a son.”

The Thought

These verses make us think that Manoah was hand picked by God to father this particular child with the destiny that he would have. That was true. But in a way it is true for all families. God knows every child conceived on the earth. And He has a plan for the life of each one. Many find those plans and follow. Many don’t.

On reading Samson’s story we get the impression that he hovered between God’s will and his own. He can come across as a spoilt child of ageing parents. We have to remind ourselves that he was chosen from conception to be a Nazarite, and to do some of the things he did.

The angel made it clear to this future mother that her child would be different. Because of that she was to watch what she ate and drank! Now see to it that you drink no wine or other fermented drink and that you do not eat anything unclean. You will become pregnant and have a son whose head is never to be touched by a razor because the boy is to be a Nazarite, dedicated to God from the womb. He will take the lead in delivering Israel from the hands of the Philistines (v4-5).

Action

Many women today stop drinking alcohol and watch their diets as soon as they know they are pregnant. Pray for any you know.

Pray for the children you see today, that each one would find God’s plan for their lives. No matter how strange that appears.

Read Numbers 6 where God explained to Moses what the Nazarite vow entailed.
