Remembering – Day 28
After the angels had told the family of Lot to head for the hills and never look back, God rained burning sulphur on Sodom and Gomorrah. Sadly, his wife could not resist the temptation to turn around and look back. At that very moment she became a pillar of salt!
Luke 17:32
Remember Lot’s wife!
The Thought
One of the shortest verses in the Bible gives us an important lesson! Many people who have never read the Bible know about Lot’s wife who was turned into a pillar of salt because she looked back. This part of Biblical history is recounted in Genesis 19.
After Abraham and his nephew Lot had parted ways, Lot went to live in Sodom. God told Abraham that He was planning to destroy that city, and Abraham pleaded with Him to save the city because there must be some righteous people there. After bargaining down through the numbers, God promised Abraham that if He found 10 righteous people in the city He would not destroy it (Genesis 18:32). How tragic that there were not even ten good people there! Consequently God sent His angels to rescue Lot with his wife and two daughters, before the destruction happened.
I find that chapter one of the strangest in the Bible! The homosexuals in the town went after the angels, and Lot offered his two virgin daughters to them instead! The angels came to the rescue and the girls remained virgins. (Not for very long!)
After the angels had told the family to head for the hills and never look back, God rained burning sulphur on Sodom and Gomorrah. Sadly, Lot’s wife could not resist the temptation to see what was happening and she turned to look. At that very moment she became a pillar of salt!
Luke’s point in reminding us of this episode is made in the verse following our verse today: Whoever tries to keep their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life will preserve it (Luke 17:33).
Action
Read Genesis 18 & 19 today and remind yourself that God still punishes the wicked. But He gives them several opportunities to do what is right before He brings on their destruction.
Pray today for any you know who are definitely going the wrong way.
