Remembering – Day 13

Deuteronomy 8:11

Be careful that you do not forget the Lord your God, failing to observe his commands, His laws and His decrees that I am giving you this day.

The Thought

The book of Deuteronomy is a series of farewell speeches given by Moses to the people of Israel. He was a hundred and twenty years old and was preparing to die. He knew his work was finished, he knew he had completed his God-given task and was ready to go Heavenward for his reward! What a blessing it must be to know that we have run the race and are ready for the prize!

The expression run the race, appears a few times in our Bibles: (1 Corinthians 9:24, Galatians 2:2 and 5:7, and Hebrews 12:1).

Those verses are not suggesting that we compete with fellow Christians to see who will have the highest place in Heaven! Not at all! We each have a personal race to run, and we must pray at each step of the way to make sure we are still on the right track.

Moses recognised when God revealed Himself in the burning bush that he would have a huge responsibility, a long journey, which would not always be easy. There certainly were quite a few difficulties along the way. But Moses made it to the end. He saw the promised land in the distance, on the other side of the river Jordan and left the next stage to Joshua.

Through all their travels Moses encouraged the Israelites to never forget what God had done for them, to retell the history to their children and grandchildren.

We must do the same.

Action

Read some of the verses given above and pray that you will recognise and fulfill your God-given task, remembering too to tell the next generation not to forget what God has done for you and can do for them.
