Psalm 23 – Day 28

Psalm 23:6

Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life.

The Thought

This verse makes me think of Jesus’ words in the closing verse of Matthew’s gospel saying “I am with you always, even to the end of the age”. It just didn’t happen as the disciples had hoped and expected. They had not yet learned about the Holy Spirit’s continual presence.

In the Amplified Bible version of this verse, we read “Surely goodness and mercy and unfailing love shall follow me all the days of my life.”

How much richer is the original language than our modern languages today!

It has been God’s cry since the beginning of time, from before putting mankind on the earth, to have people walk closely with Him. God walked with Adam in the garden, then we read in Genesis 5:21 that Enoch, six generations from Adam walked very closely with God. Noah was another who enjoyed God’s company and “found favour with” Him (Genesis 6:8).

I am also reminded of Moses’ farewell speech when he was encouraging Joshua to take over the leadership of the Israelites as they moved into the promised land. In Deuteronomy 31 we read the same expressions just two verses apart.

The Lord Himself goes before you, and will be with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Deuteronomy 31:6&8

Action

Ask yourself today if you are 100% sure of God’s presence in your life.

Talk to Him as you do to a really good friend. Don’t be “religious” about it and use prayers that others have written, that is not the way you talk to your earthly family and friends. Be natural, but be grateful too that the Almighty God wants to walk and talk with you. Make the most of that today, and thank Him for being there.
