Psalm 23 – Day 23

Psalm 23:5

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil, and my cup overflows.

The Thought

The 5th verse of the psalm we have been looking at this month, is such a rich verse. In its entirety, it speaks of feasting, and health, and ends with this wonderful expression “my cup overflows”!

Can you feel David’s joy as he sang those words?

Have you ever felt that your “cup overflowed”? There are moments in all our lives when we feel as thought nothing is going right, and in those times it is good to remember the good things, moments when we have been blissfully happy. That helps us to be confident they will happen again.

Sadly there are many oppressed peoples in the world today who have little reason to rejoice. People who are sick or suffering, mentally, emotionally and physically. There are many who don’t know the Saviour’s love. But within many of those communities there are also individuals who have found Jesus. People who are learning to live above their circumstances, and rejoice in their spirits no matter what happens.

David himself had experienced these things. When being pursued by King Saul who David had served faithfully for many years, he ended up hiding in a cave (1 Samuel 22:1). It is interesting that the following verse tells us that others in the same situation joined him.

Depressed or miserable people attract other depressed miserable people!

Action

Praise God today that He turns our sorrow into rejoicing. That He makes your cup overflow with good things. Look for those things throughout the day today and smile when you find them. Your smile will affect others around you.

Read again the psalm 104 which we read yesterday and be encouraged.

Read Isaiah 12 which is a wonderful short chapter and an encouraging psalm about the Joy of the Lord.
