Jonah – Day 5

Jonah 1:9-10

Jonah answered, “I am a Hebrew and I worship the LORD, the God of Heaven, who made the sea and the land.” This terrified them and they asked, “What have you done?” (They knew he was running away from the LORD, because he had already told them so.)

The Thought

The captain of the ship found Jonah asleep and woke him with a request to call on his God for safety! This poor prophet must have been frustrated with that request! The very thing he didn’t want to do was talk to his God. But he obviously followed the captain upstairs and joined the others for a casting of lots to see whose responsibility this was! The lot fell on Jonah (Jonah 1:7).

Jonah was very open and honest about his situation, which seems ludicrous to me! The verses for today tell us that he had already told the others on board that he was running away from The Lord!

Can you imagine a man of God today admitting “I follow the Lord of Lords, but at the moment I’m running away from Him”? It is a crazy idea, and yet many today do just that. But we are not so open with others about what we are doing.

We acknowledge that God exists. That He is ultimately responsible for the world as we know it. But we don’t obey Him. Many will say, “Yes I believe in God. But I don’t practice any faith”. Sooner or later a storm will come their way, so that they are forced to decide whether or not they really believe in God and all that He is.

Action

Pray for those you know who have a dormant faith. Pray that they waken before the storm comes.

Praise God for His storms designed to draw people to Him.
