Idols – Day 7

Psalms 135:15-18

The idols of the nations are silver and gold, made by human hands. They have mouths, but cannot speak, eyes, but cannot see. They have ears, but cannot hear, nor is there breath in their mouths. Those who make them will be like them, and so will all who trust in them.

The Thought

How sad these verses are, we can hear the psalmist’s disappointment with the people because they turned to idols rather than to his loving God for anything and everything they thought they needed. All through the Bible we have verses which are very similar because throughout the Old Testament, we read that the Israelites were stubborn and continued to turn to idols which they made themselves!

How could they compare those pieces of stone, wood or metal with The Living Lord?

This could be a depressing study if we allowed it to be, but instead the hope and prayer is that it will be a challenge to everyone to consider how much we value things; ourselves, our own work, or our possessions, more than we value our relationship with Father God.

God’s plan from the beginning was that His children would love Him! It sounds simple but can be difficult if we allow it to be!

Action

Ask yourself today how much you value your relationship with your Heavenly Father.

Who do you turn to for help, for encouragement, for solace, for “a shoulder to cry on”?

Is there anything in your home that you value emotionally? Why?

It is not wrong to be emotional over possessions, but if we think of those things more than we honour Jesus or His Heavenly Father, they have become idols for us.

Read Psalm 135 today and praise God for what He has done in your family history just as the psalmist did.
