Idols – Day 24

Revelation 2:14

Nevertheless, I have a few things against you: There are some among you who hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to entice the Israelites to sin so that they ate food sacrificed to idols and committed sexual immorality.

The Thought

Throughout the Bible, we read of the same problem recurring generation after generation. Satan has never given up! As he tempted Eve, and as Adam forgot what God had said, so he tempts all of us at some point in our lives. For many, sadly, that is a recurring experience.

Today’s verse is from the letter John was told to write to the church in Pergamum. It starts with the Lord acknowledging that the believers there do not live in an easy situation: living where satan has his throne (verse 13)! That is an excuse many of us could have today, we live and work amongst people who do not have any idea who Jesus really is, and are idol worshippers whether they know it or not.

But that verse is followed by today’s verse which starts with a nevertheless suggesting that we must not throw the first stone (John 8:7). We must think things through before acting!

Action

Read John 8:1-11 today for the story of the woman caught in adultery. Challenge yourself about what your reaction would be if that happened in your circle, what would you be thinking about?

Jesus was gentle with so many who others considered as “sinners”, and we must follow His example. We can be disapproving without being judgemental. We can hate the sin while loving the sinner.

Pray for any you know who are teachers or prophets leading others down the wrong path as this verse tells us that Balaam did (Numbers 22). Pray for their eyes to be opened to the truth.
