Hope – Day 7

Proverbs 24:13-14

Eat honey my son, for it is good; honey from the comb is sweet to the taste.
Know also that wisdom is like honey for you: If you find it, there is a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off.

The Thought

Often in the book of proverbs, wisdom and hope go together. Here we find wisdom being described as honey, which is sweet, easy to swallow, and very soothing for sore throats!

As we read the Bible, we can get the picture that honey is a sure antidote for many things. (There are 62 mentions of honey in my Bible. Maybe it merits a study on its own!)

Those listening to or reading these old testament proverbs would be accustomed to eating honey as a “cure-all”. They would understand maybe more than we do today what exactly the writer was saying.

For an instant “pick-me-up” a spoon full of honey can give energy quickly. Wisdom in knowing what to do in an emergency can do the same. Knowing what to do in difficult situations can save lives, change circumstances and energise others through encouragement and example.

Action

Think today about your hopes for this year which has just opened before us. What are your hopes for yourself? What are your hopes for the area you live in?

Having seen in todays verse that hope and wisdom are linked, pray for wisdom in your dealings with others, and pray for wisdom for your local councillors, and for the people you work with. Pray that there may be a future hope for your area, and for the families of others who work with you.

Pray also for the wider circle of influence in your representatives in government. For wisdom for politicians. Pray that they will be able to bring confident hope to those who are trusting them to change our world.
