Hope – Day 10

3 John 1:14

I hope to see you soon, and we will talk face to face. Peace to you. The friends here send their greetings. Greet the friends there by name.

The Thought

The word HOPE appears 180 times in the version of the Bible that I read telling us that it is a relatively important theme in God’s word. In Him there is always hope, without Him there is none. Today’s Bible verse is the last mention of hope.

John’s third and shortest letter is one that many of us could have written, a personal letter to a friend. It describes several events that are mentioned nowhere else, and ends with the hope of seeing the receiver of the letter very soon.

John mentions three totally different personalities in this message. Gaius, the receiver of the letter (3 John 1:1), is a favourite of John, and the letter opens with an appreciation of him.

Diotrephes (v 9) is not so popular. He is criticised for his lack of hospitality, and an attitude of control that is not expected of Christian leaders.

Demetrius is the third character and seems to be doing what is right in everyone’s eyes. He is well spoken of by everyone (v12). That is a good testimony!

Action

Ask yourself today how much hope and encouragement you receive from your Christian leaders. Do you get time to talk with them “face to face” as is John’s desire with Gaius.

Read this short chapter of 3John today and think about your church leaders or group leaders. Which of John’s categories do they fit into? Pray for them.

Think about, and pray for someone you are hoping to see in the early months of 2023. Maybe someone you haven’t seen for a while, or maybe someone you see often, but who is such an interesting person that you would like to spend more quality time with them.
