Haggai – Day 9

Haggai 1:11

I called for a drought on the fields and the mountains, on the grain, the new wine, the olive oil and everything else the ground produces, on people and livestock, and on all the labour of your hands.

The Thought

This is still a part of what God was saying to the children of Israel, explaining to them exactly what He had done and why! How does this picture of an angry God withdrawing all privileges fit in with who you think God is?

We get the picture that The Almighty Lord does not do things by halves. It seems to me, that in these verses He is like a furious parent who decides to withdraw ALL privileges from a wayward child. Many of us have experienced that. Either in our own childhood or with our own children. As parents we may have been disappointed with the behaviour of our children. We expected them to understand better, to think deeper about things, and not be so self-centred.

The fact is that if God had only done one of the things He named in the verse today, He would not have got the attention of His people. What He did was to take away their very idea of what their promised land flowing with milk and honey was expected to be, and had been for the first years they lived there.

Action

Think today about the authoritative nature of God. If His attitude reminds you of hurts of your own childhood, you might need to ask someone you trust to pray for you for healing and freedom.

If you feel you have failed the Lord in what He has called you to do personally, then repent. Accept His forgiveness, which is freely available for us all, and move on with enthusiasm.
