Haggai – Day 10

Haggai 1:12

Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest, and the whole remnant of the people obeyed the voice of the Lord their God and the message of the prophet Haggai, because the Lord their God had sent him. And the people feared the Lord.

The Thought

What an encouragement this verse is, like reading the happy end of a children’s story! Imagine the gathering when the people were all listening to Haggai, and suddenly recognised themselves in what he was saying. They knew they were the guilty ones and were eager to right the wrongs, and get right with God themselves. Some would describe this sort of event today as “a spirit of repentance fell on the people”.

Many Christians today have had that experience. They have listened to a message, in church, or on-line, and suddenly been struck by their own guilt, realising why there was something wrong in their lives. Maybe not enough funds for their needs, maybe sickness or confusion about some serious decision, maybe a relationship problem.

One of the important points in this verse is that the recognition of the sin began at the top; with the leaders and the priests!

These people are mentioned again in the verse we will look at tomorrow. But let’s just remind ourselves today why God was saying these things. Think back to the verse we looked at on Day 7 of this month.

You expected much, but see, it turned out to be little. What you brought home, I blew away. Why? declares the Lord Almighty. Because of My house, which remains a ruin, while each of you is busy with your own house. – Haggai 1:9

Action

Read again today the first chapter of Haggai, and pray for the Lord to speak to you, and to the members of your church group about anything that needs correcting. Be prepared to repent and put things right. It only needs one person to see the truth clearly for many others to follow suit!
