Haggai – Day 8

Haggai 1:10

Therefore, because of you the heavens have withheld their dew and the earth its crops.

The Thought

Haggai was not wasting his words here. God was speaking and He was not making it into polite language. The prophet was telling the truth as it came straight from the Lord. He told his listeners: “The mess we are in is YOUR fault!”

That is not the sort of prophet we like to hear from.

All across the world, there are prophets rising. And hundreds of people rush to hear what they are saying, hoping to hear good things for the future. And if possible a personal word.

None of us want to be told that the mess the world is in is our fault! We much prefer to be told that we will be blessed. That God will do this and that for us personally and all will be well. But sometimes God has to go to extremes to get our attention.

In fact, sometimes, the messes we find ourselves in truly are our own fault. The friends of Job tried to tell him that his problems were because of sin in his life. But God spoke out and reprimanded the friends clearly saying that Job has spoken the truth. He was being used as a living picture of what it means to be faithful to God in ALL circumstances.

Action

Read Job 42 (the last chapter) today and rejoice that God sees everything and knows our hearts. He understands the reasons why we act and say what we do. But that doesn’t mean that what we say and do is always right.

Think about your actions and reactions to different things that you see and hear. As you go through your day, pray about any that you think are not honouring to the Lord.
