Habakkuk – Day 20

As we continue through this response of The Lord to the complaint of Habakkuk, we can feel the anger and disappointment of the Lord with a people who knew Him and were chosen by Him, but have now forgotten Him. He is reminding us once more that He sees everything!

Habakkuk 2:15-16

Woe to him who gives drink to his neighbours, pouring it from the wineskin till they are drunk, so that he can gaze on their naked bodies! You will be filled with shame instead of glory. Now it is your turn! Drink and let your nakedness be exposed! The cup from the Lord’s right hand is coming around to you, and disgrace will cover your glory.

The Thought

As we continue through this response of The Lord to the complaint of Habakkuk, we can feel the anger and disappointment of the Lord with a people who knew Him and were chosen by Him, but have now forgotten Him. He is reminding us once more that He sees everything!

Remember that God’s description here is not of his enemies, but of His chosen people. It is those who were called to be such an example of right living to the rest of the world so that they too would want to follow the God who blesses those who serve Him.

When we read “let your nakedness be exposed”, we can understand God is saying, “let people see who you really are! You who have committed sexual sins in worship to other gods”. But there could be a second meaning. We remember too that the Jewish nations were His chosen people and were physically marked by the symbol of circumcision (Genesis 17:10-12). They considered that mark, their “glory” but the Lord in His anger is saying there will be no more glory in being Jewish, because they have not lived according to His laws.

Action

Pray today for the millions around the world who were taught God’s laws, but have abandoned them to live their lives for personal gain, often mistreating others in the process.

Pray that they will come to repentance before it is too late.

Rejoice with those you know who have stayed committed to The Lord’s calling to be honest people of peace.
