The Fig Tree – Day 30

Zechariah 3:10

“On that day,” declares the Lord of Armies, “each of you will invite your neighbor to sit under your vine and fig tree.”

The Thought

Zechariah is another short prophetic book. It talks of the days after Jesus’ return, when there will be peace throughout the earth. The beginning of the chapter describes a court room where Joshua is standing besides satan. The name Joshua is a form of the name “Jesus” meaning Saviour, and is used throughout the book of Zechariah.

Here there is a different emphasis to yesterday’s reading when everyone was sitting under their own fig tree. In this closing verse of the chapter, we see hospitality at work. Everyone will trust their neighbours. There will be no fear of having things stolen or spoiled because of unruly behaviour. No embarrassment at what others might think of us when they come onto our property, see the state of our garden.

The writer of the book of Hebrews encourages us to “open our home to strangers” even before the coming of the Lord. (Hebrews 13:2)

Ask yourself how you react to that.

In Luke 10 we read the parable of “The good Samaritan”. A story which was prompted by a question from a lawyer. This legal expert was looking to justify himself thinking he had already qualified for the Kingdom. He was doing all the right things. But the story suggests that he lacked mercy, and was not kind enough to others.

Ask yourself how merciful you are, and if there are people you would not “invite to sit under your fig tree”. Ask Jesus to help you love those you should love and be merciful to.

Action

Pray as we finish this study that you will be a good “fig tree”. Pray that you will be drawing others into the Kingdom and producing good fruit for your Lord and King.
