The Fig Tree – Day 19

Our verse for today is part of a fable. I have quoted it because it spoke to me about being and doing what God has told me personally to do. Finding His purpose for your life, and following His plan is the most important thing a believer can do.

Judges 9:9-11

But the olive tree responded, “Should I stop producing oil, which people use to honor gods and humans, in order to rule the trees?” Then the trees said to the fig tree, “You come and be our king!” But the fig tree responded, “Should I stop producing my good, sweet fruit in order to rule the trees?”

The Thought

This is a strange episode in the middle of much infighting and bloodshed recorded for us in the book of Judges. The Israelites had settled in their own land after all the desert wanderings, and basically they had forgotten, or chosen to ignore, the God of their fathers. One of the key verses to much of what we read in these 21 chapters of the book of Judges is the very last one:-

In those days Israel didn’t have a king. Everyone did whatever he considered right. (Judges 21:25)

What a sad verse that is after all that God had done for them showing them that He was their king.

Our verse for today is part of a fable, (read the whole chapter to get the proper context) and I have quoted it because it spoke to me about being and doing what God has told me personally to do.

Finding God’s purpose for your life, and following His plan is the most important thing a believer can do. But we mustn’t spend all our lives trying to find His purpose for us personally. He will make it clear in His time. In the meantime we are all called to pray, to heal the sick and raise the dead.

Read again the last verses of Matthew and Mark to know what a believer should be doing.
