The Fig Tree – Day 18

Isaiah is saying to the Israelites that God has heard their boasting and that they are wrong! The people are saying that no matter what the enemy does, they will rebuild everything better than before! But God is telling them what He told them in 2 Chronicles 7:14.

Isaiah 9:10

“Bricks have fallen, but we will rebuild with hand-cut stones. Fig trees have been cut down, but we will replace them with cedars.”

The Thought

This sounds like a good verse when it’s read out of context. But if we read the full chapter, we can see that the Lord is quoting the people themselves speaking through their own pride, and making their own decisions.

The first seven verses of this chapter are a prophecy about Jesus, and then suddenly there is a change in the theme and Isaiah’s prophecy moves from the encouragement of a coming Saviour to the punishment of those who make evil plans.

Isaiah is saying to the Israelites that God has heard their boasting and that they are wrong! The people are saying “no matter what the enemy does, we’ll rebuild everything better than before”! But God is telling them what He told them in 2 Chronicles 7:14 If My people, who are called by My name, will humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

His word to us is the same. There is no place for pride and arrogance in the Christian life. And the pride and arrogance of law makers, decision makers, and religious leaders will be punished. God is a just Father who loves the creation He made, and that Jesus died to save.

Action

Pray and ask the Lord to reveal times when you have been proud of your own accomplishments, or not given Him the honour due to Him for any situation in your life.

Praise Him that He is always ready to forgive and forget our wrong attitudes.
