Doors & Gates – Day 7

The situation in Sodom went from bad to worse. Lot went out and closed the door, but failed in persuading the crowd to leave, even after offering his virgin daughters to them. After much discussion and rioting, the angels opened the door, dragged Lot inside and shut the door again!

Genesis 19:10

The men inside reached out and pulled Lot back into the house and shut the door.

The Thought

In Sodom, the situation went from bad to worse. Lot, as an elder in the town had persuaded the visitors to stay at his home. But the men of the town had found these men attractive and gathered outside Lot’s home with evil desires. Lot went out and closed the door (Genesis 19:6), but he failed in persuading the crowd to leave. Even when he offered his virgin daughters to them! (Something most of us find impossible to imagine!)

After much discussion and rioting, the angels opened the door, dragged Lot inside and shut the door again!

In this story the door of Lot’s house is a barrier between the good and the bad. We looked at the beginning of this study at “open doors” but this time we are thinking about a closed door. This door was a protection for those inside, and a barrier against the evil outside. It symbolises for us the blood of Jesus which is a barrier between us and the evil one. Also, it reminds us of His love defined for us in 1Corinthians 13 where we read: Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices in the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. (1Corinthians 13:6-8)

In these days of LGBT discussions and demonstrations it is good to remember that God has never approved of homosexuality. He made it clear in Sodom, and again in the rules for life which He gave to Israel (Leviticus 18:22 & 20:13).

Action

Pray today that all those you love will keep the door closed to the evil one. Pray for your government to make righteous decisions and keep the door closed to the enemy trying to destroy young lives today.
